How did you choose the music for the film?I have always been into music, so I’m always looking for something good. I spend a lot of time sifting through music blogs listening for the right tracks.
Do you try and appeal to a large audience, or just use what you enjoy? I don’t try to appeal to the audience. I think no matter what, people are going to either like or dislike the music I use. It’s all personal preference. The goal is always to find a track that really supports the type of edit you want to have. But of course I always use what I feel sounds best, regardless of genre.
How do you discover new songs and artists?Like I said, a lot of time spent sifting though sub-par music on random blogs. The whole process is so hit and miss. And of course I share music with all my friends. I’m always keeping an open ear!
Were any of the songs written specifically for the movie? We only had one custom track done, ‘’
Brandon Intro’’ by Shaun Gregory. He is the son of a good family friend and is a great musician. We were in a pinch and he whipped up the track in no time. Check out Shaun’s stuff
on his website.
How do you license music for use in action sport movies?Anthill Films played a huge role in licensing our music. We used a music supervisor as well to communicate with the labels. The process is always a roller coaster ride. Sometimes artists will not even license their music, period. Others are super into it, some charge through the roof, but there are also a ton of cool, small artists out there looking for promotion and involvement in cool things. Germany Germany for the Prince George segment and Reid for the Powell River segment being two examples. You never really know if you’re going to get a song or not until the last minute. Many thanks to our music supervisor, Chad Davis from
Triple9 Music with helping us license our music, and
Keith White Audio for sound engineering.
We’ve listed the full soundtrack with links to iTunes on our website if people want to download the tracks:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCREM8jyCJk | I was having a hard time finding a song for this crucial intro segment. I really wanted to have the intro blend into the first segment quickly and ramp up. I couldn't find that perfect song for a while. When I hear something random and cool on my iPod I always take a screen shot as a note. One day I was flipping through my photos and found this track. I listened to it and it was perfect. One of those tracks that gets buried in your library until the perfect moment arises. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAkWAExzLJI | For the intro track of Brandon's segment I had an edit cut to a song, but it just wasn't cost effective to license an entire song for a 30 second piece. I contacted Shaun and got him to create his own track that matched the beat and tempo changes of the original track - he killed it! When it comes to the Nero track, that was a song that I heard and was like ''yup, that's it, Brandon's segment.'' When you hear a song playing and all you can see is the segment playing in your head, that's when you know you have a nug song. Love it, that song has some serious power! |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYpDJw7fThU&ob=av2n | For Prince George I felt the footage had a lighthearted, fun and mellow feel. That's how the trip was for us; all the zones we hit were awesome. It was sweet seeing where Norbs developed as a rider. The track ''River'' just fit the mood right. When it comes to the train gap, I really had to have a song that portrayed the true meaning and feeling of great accomplishment that this gap was all about. This gap was over 10 years in the making for Norbs and it was a serious lifelong goal accomplished in his hometown! Chase and Status kill it and always have amazing tracks. I had been sitting on this song for a long time waiting to bust it out; the train gap was its time to shine. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHNfesQGmtM | This was another segment that I had a hard time finding a song for, but as soon as I played it to the footage I knew it was the one. I have been listening to Digitalism for a long time and have never used one of their tracks. This one has a very different feel than their songs usually do. I needed something that felt fun and playful - this one was the ticket. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_Tz3mJ4Nj8 | Stevie's segment was the first thing that we shot for Inside Out, we killed it and hit the road home. After two ferry rides I had thrown together a rough edit. I tried song after song after song with no luck. Nothing fit. I gave up and just let the edit sit, which is very unlike me. I was trying to get something powerful, upbeat, and fast in the way of music. Something like Pennywise, something that portrayed Stevie's power and speed. But I had my head in the wrong gear; I tried a totally different genre of music - Hip Hop. I stumbled across this track in my library and loved it because of the dubstep-esque background sound. It all worked out in the end and I feel it's the perfect track. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN3_GU6qFP0 | Kenny's segment to me was the most important segment to get the perfect song for. He put in SO much time creating 100% original lines, and risking his life over and over, he deserved this segment to be as good as it possibly could be. Ken is a Slayer lover, and we had the goal to use a hardcore song to match Ken's hane-sending ways. But through the editing process I ended up cutting the segment to an equally powerful, but very different type of music. Drum and Bass has to be my favorite type of electro music. It's a classic sound that can't be beat. This track is another beautiful display of Chase & Status' talent; it's a seriously rad song. The hard-hitting beats and upbeat tempo match Kenny's overly gnarly lines from beginning to end. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DH6c9010VLk | This segment was a long time coming for us. We had seen this zone throughout the old classic films (eg. Ride to the Hills, Kranked 5), it influenced our riding as kids. It meant a lot to get out there with one of the pioneers of the sport. Being in such an epic zone required a track that matched that vibe, the track needed to be cinematic and support that euphoric feel of golden alpine light. I feel this song was just the right one, also with an appropriate title ''Ribbons of Light''. We were playing the waiting game throughout the shoot, waiting for those epic ribbons of light to pop through the clouds. Luckily we got it for the final three shots in the segment. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoTfw2UVH9s | I was so stoked to finally have the perfect opportunity to use a Wilderness Crew song. The Wilderness Crew is a hip-hop group from my hometown of Roberts Creek. I have been listening to their music for years and their lyrics are always positive and relatable to my life. No rapping about money, hoes and bitches. For the credits I wanted to be able to look back on the year, all the funny moments and laugh about it. I wanted a friendly fun feel, but also with a mellow, but happy supporting sound. With so many good tracks I tried a bunch but ''Killers of the Funk'' was a perfect fit. |
